Hub-Bub Record Shop and Realty
Protagonist: Lina Derritt
Address: 1208 E. 105th Street, Cleveland, OH
When one of the best boxers of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson came to Cleveland in 1947, one of the places he visited was the Hub-Bub Record Shop and Realty, owned by Lina Deritt. Lina opened the Hub-Bub Record shop at its first location, 1208 East 105th Street, with her Husband Robert. The Hub-Bub Record shop would move a few times to allow for space expansion and the addition of the reality business.
Reportedly, Lina Derritt, is the first African-American woman to obtain her brokerage license. This allowed her to support African Americans buying homes in the Wade Park area.
We are still discovering more about Lina Derritt, who passed away in 1967. If you or some you know ever bought a house, or a record from the Hub-Bub Record Shop and Realty, let us know!
Here’s what we imagined was on sale/spinning at the Hub-Bub during Sugar Ray Robinson’s visit in 1947.
Though the Hub-Bub isn’t around anymore, it doesn’t mean there aren’t still Black-owned record shops to purchase from. Check out:
