Engagement + Events
The work of Chocolate City Cleveland, doesn’t just occur in the digital realm through our website and Interactive Map, the CCC work is ongoing and taking place directly with our community. Our programming is adding to the ongoing conversations we are having around Black imagination, site activation, and memory.
Our ongoing summer program is our Intergenerational Lunches.
The Intergenerational Lunches take place from March - September and grew from a focus group about Cleveland’s Black East Side, to a monthly gathering of various ages. Our intergenerational lunches provide a space for the elders of our community to share their memories and experiences, for younger generations to ask questions and to celebrate our Black past, to provide skills/tools to our community through partnerships, and to discuss our future over a delicious lunch.
Speaker Series
To continue to promote history-keeping, dialogue, and nurturing our connection to creativity and authors, we have an ongoing speaker series. We invite Black authors to speak to and about their work with an audience. The series for 2023 is all about unearthing our historical truths and experiences.
On June 17th, 2023, we have Author Dr. Nishani Frazier speaking about her book Harambee City: The Congress of Racial Equality in Cleveland and the Rise of Black Power Populism. This book was instrumental in building the foundation of the Chocolate City Cleveland project.
Salon Series
New for 2023, Chocolate City Cleveland is experimenting with a salon experience. As an opportunity to engage deeper on topics, discuss tactics/tools for site activation and memory keeping.
You may be wondering, what are salons? Salon’s are gatherings led by a host. For this series, ThirdSpace Action Lab is gathering leaders, thinkers, and creatives to discuss topics such as architecture/design, creative place-making, and organizing around policy and across racial lines.
If you are interested in participating in a future salon, email: CCC@3rdspaceactionlab.co
We continue to add programming and events that enrich, liven, and foster creativity.
